LINER NOTES:
Olivia Wilde’s first film filled me with such emotion, it was almost a shock—a shock how much I cared about her characters—all of them. So when I got a call for a meeting on her new film, I was utterly delighted. Whilst she could probably have hired any of the hip, cool, young ones of Hollywood, she seemed to want someone seasoned, who could help her craft the story in a very deliberate way. The collaboration between Olivia and I was rooted in her deep understanding of every aspect of the film and how it would affect the audience. I would describe her as having golden ears, as there was pretty much no sound, texture or line that she couldn’t hear, however buried or ephemeral.

On this score, I was also very lucky to have Holly Sedillos as an MVA - “Most Valuable Asset” - this includes 6am sessions, (normally a strict “fuck off” response from most singers - except ultra low basses for whom last night’s indulgences can bring forth the really low low stuff:) and an endless willingness to create all the guttural, painful, and sleep apnea-based noises you will hear. We backed her up with a great choir in NY but in retrospect she is an essential key to how this score blossomed into being. 

And ultimately, if the music we created for this film could be described as dark yet yearning for the possibility of romance, I hope it evokes another important aspect of Olivia’s vision for the film - women’s terrible disappointment in men."
